In Europe the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that health care staff be issued with P2 and P3 "Healthcare Respirators" to protect themselves whilst caring for people that are actually infected with viruses like Swine Flu, Avian Flu, TB, SARS etc. In North America and the Rest of the World the WHO recommends that hospital staff should use the North American rated N95 "Healthcare Respirators". In hospital isolation units the WHO also recommends the wearing of other personal protection equipment such as goggles and gloves etc. It is also recommended that people suspected of being infected should wear a surgical face mask with a minimum BFE (Bacterial Filtration Efficiency) of at least 99%.
There are many different types of P2, P3, and N95 masks. Some are intended only to protect the wearer from hazards like dust and fumes. These include MB Filters masks, the Mark 30, Mark 32V, and the MB61V, as well as the 3M 1800 series of masks: 3M 1862, 3M 1863, 3M 1872v, and the 3M 1873v in Europe and the 3M 1860 and 3M 1870 N95 rated Healthcare Respirators in North America.
